The term ‘soil-steel’ structures was first coined in 1976, when the author began his involvement in the first edition of the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code (OHBDC) in Canada. Since that time, Canadian engineers have been involved in many innovations in the design and construction of soil-steel and soil-aluminum structures, collectively referred to as ‘soil-metal structures.’ The author had been fortunate enough to have been involved, directly or indirectly, in at least some of these innovations. This paper essentially chronicles his journey in the field of soil-metal structures, which covers a span of nearly 30 years, three editions of the OHBDC and two editions of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
