birthplaceofSolidarność,theSolidaritymovement,
whichledtothefallofCommunisminCentraland

capitalandlargestcityofLowerSilesiaisWrocław,
locatedontheOderRiver.TodayWrocławisone
ofPoland’slargestandmostdynamiccitieswitha
rapidlygrowinginternationalprofleandisregarded
asoneofthemostimportantcommercial,educa-
tionalandtouristsitesinthecountry.

Centreisamultifunction-
alinstitutioncombining
scientific,culturaland
educationalactivitieswithamodernmuseumand
archive,whichdocumentsfreedommovementsin
themodernhistoryofPolandandEurope.The
CentrewasestablishedinGdańskonNovember
8th2007.Itsnewbuildingwasopenedin2014on
theanniversaryoftheAugustAccordssignedin
Gdańskbetweentheworkers’union“Solidarność”
andcommunistauthoritiesin1980.TheCentreis
meanttobeanagora,aspaceforpeopleand
ideasthatbuildanddevelopacivicsociety,ameet-
ingplaceforpeoplewhoholdtheworld’sfuture
dear.ThemissionoftheCentreistocommemorate,
maintainandpopularisetheheritageandmessage
oftheSolidaritymovementandtheanti-communist
democraticoppositioninPolandandthroughout
theworld.ThroughitsactivitiestheCentrewantsto
inspirenewcultural,civic,tradeunion,localgovern-
ment,nationalandEuropeaninitiativeswithauni-
versaldimension.

Poland,acityinwesternPoland,perfectlysituated
inthecentreofEuropeandwithadeepunderstand-
ingofbothWesternandEasternEurope.
