ferent.Teyoungestparticipantsoftheprotestmovementconsideredthemselves
tobefull-fledgedmembers,sometimesevenmoresignificantandcompetentthan

RussiaarereminiscentoftheeventsinUkrainethreeyearsprior.Teyoungest
participantsoftheRussianprotestsdonothesitatetospeakontheirownbehalf.
Teyconsiderthemselvestobeagentsofchangeand,insomecases,evenleadtheir
parentsbyhandtotherallies.Aretheseprotestactionsthebeginningofanew
spiralofinterestinpublicpolicyinRussia?Coulditbethatprotestingwillbecome
popularagainandtheyouthwillbecomefull-fledgedparticipants?Canwesaythat
today,aftertheEuroMaidaninUkraine,theuelectro-Maidan”inArmeniaandthe
anti-corruptionralliesinRussia,civicparticipationisfinallybecomingnormalfor
post-Sovietyouth?Didthesemassprotestsańecttheirbasicvalues,theirideas
aboutthefutureofthecountryorabouttheirroleinthisfuture?
Tefirstpartofmyresponsetothesequestionscanbegiveninthefollowing
way:despitethenewwaveofpoliticisationofyouth,thedilemmaofself-reliance
andtheinfantilismoftheyoungandradicalstillremainprevalenttoday.Russian
sociologistsclosetotheauthorities,suchasValeryFyodorov,thedirectorofthe
RussianPublicOpinionResearchCentre,havealreadycalledfortheneedutopre-
ventthosewhoareencouragingteenagersandyoungpeopletoopenlyantisocial
