Aprosperouseconomy,accordingtoFriedrichHayekandMiltonFriedman,issuf-
ficientnotonlyforthematerialwell-beingofsocietybutalsoforfosteringjustice
andfreedom.Paradoxically,mostofthosewhocallthemselvesliberalsinCentral
Europeseethemselvesandareperceivedbyothersasneoliberalsratherthan
modernliberaldemocrats.
Greatenemyofliberalism
Itisagainstthisbackgroundthatwehavetojudgetherecentdevelopmentsin
CentralandEasternEurope.AlthoughtheilliberaltendenciesofCentralEuropean
nationalistshavebeenpresentsinceatleastthefallofcommunism,therefugee
crisishasmobilisedthefarrightandshownthatradicalgroupsaremorenumerous
herethaninWesternEurope.And,indeed,liberaldemocraciesdonothaveasound
strategytodealwiththerefugeecrisis.Teonlyexcusetokeeptherefugeesoutis
securityandthepreservationofcurrentstandardsofliving.
