Orbánhadinmind.
HereisthekeypartofOrbán’s
speech:“thestartingpointofthelib-
eralorganisationofsocietyisbased
ontheideathatwehavetherightto
doanythingthatdoesnotinfringeon
thefreedomoftheotherpartywhat
weexperiencedcontinuouslyineverydaylifewasthatthestrongestdecided
inthissense(author’semphasis)thenewstatethatweareconstructingin
Hungaryisanilliberalstate,anon-liberalstate.Itdoesnotrejectthefundamen-
talprinciplesofliberalismsuchasfreedom”.Itisclearenoughtoanyonewho
carestoreaditthatthesentenceinwhichthewordilliberalismappearsisabout
economicsandithasaveryspecifcHungariancontext.Thiswasignored,how-
ever,eventhoughitiscentralinexplainingwhatilliberalismmeansforHungary.
Still,habentsuafatalibelliandsodowords.Theconceptofilliberalismhas
acquiredalifeofitsown.Indeedithasbeenextensivelyredefnedandthe
Hungariancontexthasentirelydisappeared.Inthiswayithasallowedawide
rangeofuserstoestablishapositive-negativepolarity:portrayingliberalismin
apositivelightandilliberalisminanegativelight.Equally,themeaningofillib-
eralismhasbroadenedandisnowsometimesusedtomeansomethingclose
toautocracy.ThatishowthewordisoftenappliedtopresentdayHungaryand
elsewhere.Wearealongwayfromdata-basedargumentswhenemotionally
