Ageneralpicturecanbedrawn,fromastudybyMcMahon[1992,pp.465-482],
whichsuggeststhatthelowerqualityandprestigeoflocalprogrammes/
/institutionsandtheunavailabilityofdesiredprogrammesinthehomecountry
areimportantpushfactorsforstudyingabroad.Itisclear,however,thatmore
researchisrequiredinordertogainmoredetailedinsightintotheinfluenceof
specificenvironmentalpushfactors.
AccordingtoMazzerolandSoutar[2002,pp.82-90](respondentscomingfrom
Taiwan,India,ChinaandIndonesia),thefivemostimportantfactorsfordecid-
ingtostudyinaparticularhostcountrywerethequalityofitseducation,thefact
thatthequalificationsofthehostwererecognisedathome,theeaseofobtaining
informationonthehostcountry,thereputationofinstitutionsinthehostcountry,
andknowledgeofthehostcountry.
Fromtheaboveitcanbeconcludedthatthemostimportantpullfactorsof
acountryareahighqualityandgoodreputationofeducation,andagood
knowledgeandstudentawarenessofthedestinationcountry.Thismeansthat
otherfactors(suchasthoserelatingtotuitionfeesandlivingcosts,andsocial
andgeographicallinkages)arelessimportantfactors.
Themainpullfactorsofahighereducationinstitutionarethefollowing:
Awideknowledgeandawarenessofaninstitutionamongstudents,
Ahighperceivedqualityandreputationoftheinstitutionanditseducation
andresearch,
Recognitionofdegreesorotherqualificationsbythehostinstitutionand
countryoforigin,andahighmarketabilityofthedegree/qualification,
Thecostsofhighereducation(tuitionfeelevel,theavailabilityoffinancial
aid,travelexpenses,andlivingcosts),
Thenatureofgovernanceandadministrativeproceduresofahighereduca-
tioninstitution,
Thesafetylevelwithintheinstitution/oncampus,
Thelevelofinternationalisationofaninstitution(numberofinternational
studentsandstaff,andtheavailabilityanddiversityofinternationalpro-
