Introduction
Asascholarlyconcept,facehasexistedforabout60years.Itwasfirstintro-
ducedtoacademicdiscoursebyErvingGoffman.InhisseminalworkInterac-
tionritual:Essaysonface-to-facebehavior,hedefinesfaceas“thepositive
socialvalueapersoneffectivelyclaimsforhimselfbythelineothersassume
hehastakenduringaparticularcontact”or“animageofselfdelineatedin
termsofapprovedsocialattributes”(1967,p.5).Goffman’sunderstandingof
faceisvisiblyinfluencedbytheChineseconceptualisationpresentedbyHsien
ChinHu(1944)andbysomesociologicaltheories(e.g.,EmileDurkheim,1915).
Goffman’sideasaboutfaceandfaceworkbecameaninspirationformanyschol-
arsandresearchersindifferentacademicdisciplines.
Thepaperspresentedinthisvolumeconstituteacontributiontoadiscus-
siononface,faceworkand(im)politeness.Thevolumeconsistsoffourparts,
eachofwhichdiscussesfaceandface-relatedissuesfromdifferentperspec-
tives,andindifferentculturesandlanguages.Part1,Faceand(im)polite-
nesstheoreticalissues,introducesthereadertothenatureoftheconceptof
faceandface-constitutingfactors.Thefirstchapterdrawingondatafromthe
