overtheruleofPomeraniaaferthedeathofPrzemysłIIin1296.
In1298,ŁokietekexemptedtheLübecmerdantsfromresridions
imposedbycoasallawandallcusomsdutiesandfeesonland,as
wellasagreedtoallowthemtoesablishatradeagencyinGdańsk
withfulljudicialimmunity.Charaderisically,sudwideinfluence
ofLübecmerdantsinGdańskblocedthedevelopmentoflocal
merdantsandtheiradiveparticipationinmaritimetrade.Only
isolatedmentionstothepresenceofGdańskmerdantsinLübec
orintheHanseaticLeagueagenciesinBrugesandLondonbefore
1308havebeenpreserved.1
However,thepresenceofHanseaticLeaguemerdantsinPo-
meraniaandPrussiawasguaranteedprimarilybytheirfriendly
contadswiththeTeutonicKnightsduringtheperiodwhenthey
wereextendingtheircontrolovertheBalticSea.Aferthedefeat
oftheLivonianBrothersoftheSwordandtheincorporationof
thisorderintotheTeutonicOrderin1237,theTeutonicKnights
becametheHanseaticLeague)smosimportantallyinitstrade
relationswithRutheniaandguarantorsofthesecurityofits
tradingpossinLivonia.Elbląg,esablishedin1237,becamethe
mosimportantHanseaticportontheVisulaRiver.Admittedly,
thereisnoconfirmedsourceinformationabouttheparticipation
ofLübecmerdantsintheexpeditionthatledtothefoundingof
theoriginalcasle,buttheirparticipationinthefoundationofthe
cityandtheirinfluenceonthesrudureofElblągareindilutable.
Lübecmerdantswerealsointeresedinconsolidatingtheirinflu-
