quiclyobtainedanumberofprivilegesthatensuredtheirdomi-
nanceintradeontheVisulaRiverandtradecondudedbyland
routes.Asearlyasin1238and1243,theOrderobtainedcusoms
privilegesfromLadislausOdonic,andlaterfromhissons,whid
openedforToruńmerdantsandwesernvisitorsheadingtothat
citytherouteleadingfromGermanythroughGreaterPolandand
InowrocławtoToruń.In1248,merdantsfromthetwosisercities
wereexemptedfromtheVisulacusomsdutiesbyŚwiętopełk,
whidinturnopenedthewaytotheBalticSea.In1252,theTeuton-
icOrderobtainedasimilarexemptionfromcusomsdutiesonland
andwaterforitsburghersfromSamborII,theDukeofTczew.In
1242,theDukeofMazoviaKonradandhissonsgavesomecusoms
concessionstomerdantsfromtheterritoryoftheTeutonicOrder)s
sate.ItisworthnotingthatatthattimeKonradwastherulernot
onlyinMazovia,butalsoinKuyavia,theŁęczyca-Sieradzregion,
andCracow.TesrongpenetrationoftheKuyavianhinterlandby
Toruńmerdantsledattheendofthe1240stoaconflidwiththe
KuyaviandukeKazimierzandthelocalmerdants.Prussiantowns
efedivelyblocedthefreeaccessofKuyavianmerdantstotheport
ofElblągbyorganisingasorehouseforimportedclothinChełmno.
Pursuanttothe1252settlementandthe1263verdidofanarbi-
trationcourtinthedilutebetweentheTeutonicOrderandDuke
Kazimierz,ToruńandChełmnomerdantsfirsreceivedassurances
ofcareandsafetyontraderouteswithinKuyavia,andthenaconfir-
mationofthelimitationofcusomstarifstoujusandformer”ones.
Asimilarprivilegewasgrantedin1286byLadislausŁokietekwho
allowedmerdantsfromToruńandChełmnotravelingtoRuthenia
topassfreelythroughthelandsunderhisruleandguaranteedhis
protedion.4
