previoustwotakingplaceinNovember1993(asaspecialeventatthecon-
ferenceNewTrendsinSemanticsandLexicographyinKazimierzDolny)and
inMay2001inLublin.TesersttwoseriesweretranslatedintoPolishand
publishedasLangacker1995and2005thistimewehavedecided(atleast
forthetimebeing)topublishthemintheoriginalEnglish.Terearetwo
majorreasonsforthisdecision.First,thesubjectmatterdiscussedisvery
profoundlybasedonEnglishdataandthetheorybeingdevelopedexplores
fundamentalcognitiveaspectsofthedata.Second,theideasproposedhere,
evenifnotallofthemtotallynew,arenovelenoughfortheEnglishreadership
tohopefullyappreciatetheirpresentation.AsProf.Langackerstateshimself
ononeoccasion,afullertreatmentoftheseissuesisstillpendingweare
happytoblazethetrailwiththisvolume.
TeauthorlookshereatonespecificareawithintheEnglishlanguage
system,anareathatisneverthelessdiverseandrichininternalintricacies:
nominalstructure.Tisrelativelynarrowfocusisaconsequenceofthede-
velopmentsthathavetakenplacesincehisfirstvisitin1993,whenCognitive
Grammarwasstillanewkidontheblock,theeventtakingplacenottoo
longafterthepublicationofthefirstvolumeofFoundations(Langacker1987)
andrathersoonaftertheappearanceofthesecondvolume(Langacker1991),
whichgiventhepoliticalandeconomictransitionalperiodPolandwas
undergoingatthetimewasnoteasilyavailableandrelativelylittleknown.
Itwasonlynaturalthatthoserstlecturesweredevotedtothefundamental
tenetsofthemodel,therationalebehinditsconception,andtheintroduction
