Tenotionsaddressedinthisrstlecturenotionslikefunction,system,and
privativeoppositionsshouldbequitefamiliartoaEuropeanaudience.I’m
goingtooutlineaunifiedviewasanintegralpartoftheCognitiveGrammar
frameworkasitisdevelopingthesedays.Teseareideaswhichhavealways
beenthereintheframework,butarenowcomingintotheforegroundand

CognitiveGrammar(CG)takesseriouslyapointmaderecentlybyPeter
Harder(2010):languageneedstobedescribednotonlyinbottom-upfashion,
regardingthecompositionofsuccessivelylargerstructures,butalsointop-
downfashion,intermsofhoweachstructurefunctionsaspartofalarger
whole.Ofcoursestructure(orform)vs.functionisageneralandfundamental
issue.Ithasoftenbeenobservedthatanobject’sformletsitserveacertain
function,anditsfunctiondetermineswhatitsformis.Butwhatexactlyis
meantbytermslikestructureandfunction?Inthecaseofphysicalobjects,
