AccordingtothesurveyconductedbytheNationalBookCenter
[20],Greecehas1.566libraries,including:public,academic,schooland
specialist(medical,bank,corporateandecclesiastical).Theyareparts
ofpublicorprivateorganizationsandculturalinstitutions.However,it
mustbementionedthatonly593librarieswerelistedbytheHellenic
StatisticalAuthority(http://www.statistics.gr;seealso[10])in2008.
Academiclibrariesreceivethehighestfinancialsupportfromthe
governmentandEU,becauseoftheirimportanceforeducationandre-
search.Itiscrucialthatalltypesoflibrariesshouldworkinpartnership
andbeinvolvedinarangeofactivitiesandprojectstobenefitfromthe
academiclibraries’development.
AreportofKEPE1inthe1980s,describedtheconditionoflibraries
asfollows“Mostlibrariesoperateunderobsoletelegislativeframework,
withlimitedfinancialcapabilities,withoutcoordination,cooperationand
communication,althoughtheirsimilaritiesaremany;thecontent,the
users,thegoalsandthemission.Despitethecommoncontent,audi-
ence,purposeandmission,librariesremainisolatedresultinginwork
duplication,theeconomicwasteandthereductionoftheeffectiveness”2.
Accordingtoa2002study,99%ofacademicandresearchlibrar-
ieswerefullytechnologicallyequipped,althoughpublicandmunicipal
librariesofferedconsiderablylessInternetservicesonaverage[5].
Atthattime,somepioneeringinitiativeswerestarted,suchasunion
catalogues,automationsystemimplementation,thefirstthoughbasic
nationwidenetworkofscienceandtechnologylibrariesandrecruitment
ofprofessionallibrarians[25].
TheeducationalsysteminGreeceusedtobeteacher/instructor-
centredandlibrariesplayedasecondaryroleineducation.Thismodel
hasundergoneatransformationinrecentyearsfollowingthelegislative
changesaimedtomeettheeducationalneedsoftoday’ssociety.Library
andInformationSciencemustprovidefoundationsforthenewera.
