anambitiousattemptatwritingasynthesisofthehistoryofcoinageinPoland.
InthisworkCzackidescribedsomenumismaticnds,morerelevantlyusing
thearchivalrecordsoftheBenedictinemonasteryoftheHolyCrossahoard
reportedlydiscoveredontheŁysaGóra(BaldMountain)summitamountain
whichduetoitsextraordinaryformhasaspecialplaceinthePolishhistoricaland
literarytradition.ThehoardallegedlycontainedKseveralhundredpiecesofsilver
coinandafewscoregoldcoins,withtheimagesofCaesarandAugustus”.The
reliabilityofthisrecordhandeddownbyCzackiwasexaminedingreatdetailby
JerzyKolendo,whounderstandthatthehoardinquestionincludedRomandenarii
fromtherstandthesecondcentury,oneofmanyrecordedintheterritoryof
theBarbaricum.Notlessinterestinginthiscontextisthecommentmadeby
T.Czacki,wellacquaintedwithclassicalwrittensources,includingtheGermania
andtheAnnalesofTacitus.ForthePolishhistorian,pedagogueandnumismatist
hadconcludedthatthemountainusedtobeasacredsitewithKanancienttemple
ofCastorandPollux”,andwentontoaddthatKapparentlythesecoinswereapart
oftheplundertakenfromtheLegionsofVarus,senthereinsacrice”.Thushalf
acenturyearlierthanthetextofT.MommsenwendinPolishliteraturean
attemptatlinkingancientcoinsdiscoveredintheterritoryoftheBarbaricumto
theBattleoftheTeutoburgerForest.
Asimilarideawasputforwardinthesecondhalfofthetwentiethcentury
byAndrzejKunisz,oneofthemostoutstandingPolishspecialistsinRoman
numismatics.In1970hepublished,soonafteritsdiscovery,thePołaniechoard
fromLesserPoland,therstcollectivendofRomanRepublicanandAugustan
coinsrecordednorthoftheCarpathians,andwhichisdiscussedatsomelengthin
thepresentvolume.Nexttootherattemptsatinterpretation,Kuniszadmittedthat
thehoardcouldbeafragmentofplundertakenbytheGermansintheTeutoburger
Forest.Withtheevidencenowavailablethisinterpretationisnolongertenable,but
itshouldbestressedthatthisnewdatawasunknowntoA.Kunisz.
OurmainsourceininterpretingthecircumstancesoftheinuxofRoman
coinagetotheterritoryofeast-centralandnorthernEuropeanditsusesthereare
ndsofcoinsandmedallions,andthecontextoftheirdiscovery.Onthissubject
wehavealmostnoinputfromthewrittenrecord,withtheexceptionofdetails
pertainingtothepoliticalcircumstancesoftheinuxofthiscoinage,mostlyrelated
totheperiodoftheLateEmpire.However,thereisonesignicantexception:the
highlysignicantpassageintheGermaniaofTacitus(cf.thediscussionbelow).
Notwithoutreasonisthispassagediscussedinextensointheworkpresentedhere,
indeedafragmentisusedasanelementofitstitle.
Theinterpretationofthesaidpassagehasbeenanobjectofagreatcontroversy
