Thiscooperationofrepresentativesofthewesternworldofscholarshipwith
PolishresearcherscouldhappenonlyaftertheSolidaritymovementandthefallof
theBerlinWall.Thisisnottosaythattherewerenosimilarrecordinginitiatives
duringthecommunistperiod.AverysimilarprojectwasdevelopedattheCracow
branchofthePolishAcademyofSciencesaspartoftheupsurgeofMarxist-inspired
sourcestudiesaddressingancientandearlymedievalcoins,originallyconceived
totakeinfindsfromeveryregionofPoland.However,ultimatelyRomancoin
findswerepublishedininventoriescoveringthehistoricalprovincesofSilesia,
LesserPoland,MazoviaandPodlahia,withadditionallythecatalogueofhoardsof
RomancoinsfromPolandatlarge,unfortunatelyataveryunevenlevel.Published
inPolish,theyhadnochanceofenteringEuropeancirculation.Notthatinthose
daysthisperspectivewasentertainedbymanyinPoland.
TheshiftintheresearchpolicyinPolandtothegrantsystem,theopening
upofnationalfrontiers,accessiontotheEuropeanUnionandthepossibilityof
applyingforEuropeangrantshavesubstantiallychangedthestandingofsome
researchdisciplinesinPoland,notleastofarchaeologyandnumismatics.Thanksto
severalgrantsfinancingthecataloguingofancientandearlymedievalcoinsfound
inPoland,accompaniedbyresearch,paperspresentedatconferences,andalarge
numberofpublicationsincongresslanguages,thepositionofPolishnumismatics
hasvastlyimproved.Oneconfirmationofthiswasthedecisiontakenbythe
GeneralAssemblyoftheInternationalNumismaticCouncilatitsSeptember2015
meetinginTaorminatoholdthe16
th
InternationalNumismaticCongressin2021
inPoland.Aspartofthebreakthroughassociatedwiththedevelopmentofdigital
humanitiesin2014,theUniversityofWarsawstartedtodevelopthefirstcomputer
coinfindsdatabase,accessibleon-line,consistentwiththeNUMIZworldstandards
incooperationwiththeGermanArchaeologicalInstituteinFrankfurtamMain,
theUniversityofOxford,theBritishMuseuminLondon,andtheAmerican
NumismaticSocietyinNewYork.Moreover,Polandhasbeenoneoftheinitiatorsof
thedigitalnumismaticsWorkingGroupoftheEuropeanconsortiumDARIAH-EU.
FormorethanadecadeArkadiuszDymowskihasbeenanactiveparticipant,and
onoccasion,alsoacoordinatoroftheabovementionedgrantsandworks.
Paralleltotheprogressofthestudyofcoinfinds,andmorebroadly,theprogress
ofprofessionalnumismaticsandarchaeology,sincetheearly1980s,andinPoland
notmorethanadecadelater,therehasbeenexplosionofamateurprospectingwith
theuseofmetaldetectinginWesternEurope.Ithassparkedmuchcontroversyand
aseverepolarizationofthearchaeological,numismaticandconservationcommunity.
InsomeEuropeancountries(mostnotably,EnglandandDenmark)theresponse
tothisgrowingmovementhasbeenthedecisiontoenterintoaclosecooperation
withthemetaldetectoristsandtotreatthemasallies;inothercountriessome
researchcommunitieshavecometoregardthemasenemiesofthearchaeological
heritage(numismaticsincluded)andwagedwaronthem,mostlywithpreciouslittle
