Abstract.ThepaperisbasedontheresultsoftheSPHEREproject,realisedwithinthe7th
EuropeanProgrammeincooperationwithresearchersfromPoland,England,France,Germany,
SpainandTurkey.Thewidescopeoftheresearchwasthesocialandculturalconsequencesof
economicrestructuringofoldindustrialregionsinEuropewithspecialfocusontheformer
working-classcommunities.Thegenderhabitusdominatingintheworking-classculture
foundedtherepresentationsofmasculinityonthedichotomicconceptionofrolesandattributes.
Masculinitywasbasedonperformingtheprofessionalroleandtherelatedrolesoffriendand
neighbour,performedinthepublicsphere.Andinthefamilyitwasrepresentedbytheroleof
husbandandfather-thebreadwinner,instrumentalleader,andthehighestauthority.These
representationsofmasculinitysanctifiedbythepolicyofthesocialiststate,whichofferedeco-
nomicandprestigiousprivilegeoftheheavyindustryworkingclasseveninthe1980s,became
out-datedintheprocessoftransitionfromthecentrallycontrolledeconomytothefreemarket
economy.
