TheformativeperiodofHansen’sarchitectural
developmentspanned,asalreadysuggested,fromthe
late1940stothelate1950s,adecadethatsawthe
impositionandthenrevocationofthemandate
ofsocialistrealisminPoland.Itwasalsobracketed
bytwoCIAMcongresses:theseventhatBergamoin1949
andthevaledictorymeetingatOtterloin1959.Hansen
tookpart—andforamomentcenterstage—ineach
oftheseevents,whichgatheredtheinternationalelite
ofpostwarmodernarchitecture.Althoughtheinsurgents
ofTeam10wouldposeamorelethalthreattoCIAMthan
communistcultureinthe1950s,thelatternotonly
provokedaconfrontational“East–Westdiscussion”
atBergamobutitsspectercontinuedtohoveroverthe
organization’sactivitiesthroughoutthedecade.12
Butletusstartatthebeginning.Theyearand
ahalfthatHansenspentinFrancefromlate1948toearly
1950wascrucialtohismaturationasanarchitectand
visualartist.Twofigureswhohadmajorimpactonhis
artisticdevelopmentwereLégerandPicasso.Eachatthis
dateembodiedtheidealoftheheroic,sociallycommitted
modernartist.Léger,inwhosepopularinternational
atelierHansenenrolledalongwithhisclosefriendand
compatriotLechKunka,hadlongbeenanoutspoken
advocateofworking-classvaluesandaparticipant
inFrenchcommunistdebates.In1945,afterreturning
fromawartimesojournintheU.S.,hehadformally
becomeamemberoftheCommunistParty.[FIG.2]
Picasso,towhosestudioHansenmanagedtoobtain
aninvitationthroughhisacquaintancewiththePolish
architectHelenaSyrkus,andwhothereafteroccupiedthe
highestplaceinhispantheon,hadjoinedthePartyone
yearearlier,in1944.Hewasinternationalcommunism’s
leadingculturalluminary.InlateAugust1948,amonth
beforeHansenleftforParis,bothPicassoandLégerhad
traveledtoWrocławtotakepartintheSoviet-sponsored
WorldCongressofIntellectualsinDefenseofPeace.13
