Indefining“what,”wemaynotbeabletogofurtherthanlisting
thosethingswedisagreewithinarchitectureasithasbeentillnow.
“How”signifiesthemeanswhichweconsiderproperandtheir
applicationinrealizingthenewidea.
What
Architectureuntilnow:
hasnotsolvedtheproblemofnecessaryquantity.Thegapinthe
quantityofapartmentsandsocialfacilitiesisdecreasingveryslowly,and
oftenincreasinginsteadofdecreasing.
has,asa“closedform,”notacceptedchangesinthemodeoflife,
andbecomesobsoletebeforeitisevenrealized.

failedthetest.ItseemstomethatBrasilia-Capitalwillbeantiquebefore
itiscompleted,forit,too,isbasedontheClosedForm.
Iamnotanadherentofacompulsoryevolution.However,
Idobelievethatevolutioncanbeaccelerated.Iconsidertheorganic
disregardoffreepolemicsinarchitectureananachronisticconvention
oftheClosedFormaswellasarepercussionofthetraditionalsystem
ofconstruction.
How
Ibelievethat,inagivenmaterialsituation,thepresent“swelling”
society,whichhasanarsenalofmeans,canaffordtobuildhomesand
publicfacilitiesinsufficientquantity,andonanincreasinglyhigher
standard.
Theproblemofquantity,unsolvedtillnow,liesinthemanner
inwhichthemethodsoftheClosedFormareusedtosolveother
substances—thelargequantity.Thesoonerwecastofftheshackles
oftheClosedForm—theformonwhichwehavebeenbroughtupand
consequentlyoftendonotperceiveitsdeleteriouseffect—thesoonerwill
wesolvethebasictaskofarchitecture.
