Itisourintentionthatthetextsoftheauthorsinvitedtowriteforthiscollectionform
acollectivevoiceinthediscussionoftherelationshipofmemoryandplace.Wecall
thisrelationshipmemory-place.Byemphasizingitscontentandcharacter,shaped
betweenwhatissocial(bonding,constructedbetweenpeople,collective,etc.),and
whatiseducational(memory-placeispartofsubjectiveself-creationandteachesś),
wetreatmemory-placeasasuggestedcategorythataugmentsthetheoryofsocial
pedagogy.Inturn,awareofthefactthatthisproposedcategoryisplacedbroadly
withinthefieldofsocialandpedagogicalthinking,wehaveassumedthatmemory-
placeisafunctionalcategory.Itistoservereflection,research,andsocio-educational
practicewithoutrestrictionastodiscipline.Hence,amongresearchersdeveloping
thiscategory,wecanseeeducationalists,sociologists,psychologists,geographersof
thememoryofplace(andofplaceofmemory)andartists.
Inthisway,thistext,whichsetsforththeaimsandcontentofthestudythatit
opens,alsoservesasa“wordfromtheeditors,”introducingtheissuesadumbrated
inthetitle“MemoryandPlacefromaSocio-EducationalPerspective.”Teterm
“memory,”whichisthekeywordforoursubjectmatter,means,intheunderstand-
ingproposedbyBarbaraSzacka,“institutionalizedremembranceandforgetful-
nessasakindofsocialactivity.”Shefurthersuggeststhat“thecontentofmemory
issocialinsofarasitderivesfromsocialexperienceandispassedoninthecourse
ofinterpersonalcommunication.”1Memory,understoodthus,canbesaidtodayto
bepartofaclassicapproach.IntheviewofJanSzczepański,itperformsthefol-
