elementoftheresearchprogrammeoftheInstitute,devotedto
connectionsbetweenPolishartandtheMediterraneanworld.
Polisharthistorianshaveexaminedtheseassociationsover
manyyears,beginningwiththeperiodfromtheMiddleAges
tothe18thcentury.Onlyrecentlyhastherebeenadeeper
studyoftheartofthemorerecentera,particularlyinview
ofthefactthatinthe19thcenturyassociationswithancient,
ChristianandcontemporaryRomebecameanexpressionof
resistancetotheOrthodoxandProtestantcultureandideology
oftwoofthepartitioningpowers,RussiaandPrussia.
Inviewoftheirconsiderablenumberandthematicdi-
versity,thetextsfromtheconferencehavebeendividedinto
twovolumes:

thelastPolishmonarch,KingStanisławAugustPoniatowski
(1764-1795)totheendofthe19thcentury.Theopeningtexts
areconcernedwithartistsandartisticphenomenaassociated
withthecirclewhichenjoyedhispatronage,andwiththe
dominatingfgureofFranciszekSmuglewicz,adistinguished
painterwhowaseducatedinRomeandcreatedaSchoolof
ArtattheUniversityofWilno(Vilnius).Subsequentarticles

constituteasurveyofquestionsrelatingto19thcenturyart,
particularlythoseinvolvinghistoricismandacademism.
ThankstoitsconnectionswithRomancivilisation,Polish
cultureandartwereabletoretaintheirautonomyandinde-
pendence.Thefactthattheyconfrmationtheiradherenceto
thecultureoftheWestwasalsoofconsiderablesignifcance.
Thepurposeoftheconferenceandthevolumesofstudies
thusdemonstratesimportantsourcesofthemodernPolish
tradition.
Thepresent(second)volumecontainstextsdevotedto
theinspirationofClassicismupontheartofthe20thandthe
early21stcenturies.Itcomprisesasurveyofarangeofques-
tionswithinthefeldsofarchitecture,paintingandsculpture
which,onthebasisofselectedexamples,presentsanimage
oftransformation,fromtheimitationofAntiqueformsinthe
early20thcentury,tonewartisticideaswhichmodifythese
inaccordancewiththeconventionsoftheeraofmodernism.
Beginningwithclassicalmotifsinarchitectureandarchi-
tecturaldecoration,andtheconventionsoftheNewClassicist
styleinpaintingandsculptureduringtheinterwarperiod,we
passtoavarietyofrealisationsinthefeldsoftheatre,theat-
ricalarchitecture,flmandfgurativepainting,andconclude
withananalysisofpost-classicistcreativeworkinsculpture
atthebeginningofthe21stcentury,includingthatofIgor
Mitoraj,thedistinguishedsculptorwhowaseducatedin
KrakówandworkedinItaly.
