this,itshouldbesufficienttoprayandoffersomekindofsacrifice.Godshould
beboundbysuchfavorandprovidedhekeepshisaccountbooks,heshould
soonerorlaterreturnthefavor.Thepagandivisionofrealityintosacredand
seculargrewstrongerineverydaylifeandpeoplesomehowignoredthefact
thatinGodweliveandmoveandhaveourbeingandthatonlyinGod’sgrace
wearewhoweare.PeopledidnotrecognizeGodatthemarketastheoneto
beworshipedinspiritandtruth.Andsowecannotmarvelatthefamousfool
playingrequiemforthedeadGod.
DistortedimageofGodhasbecomemostevidentinourperceptionoffree-
domasanunlimitedwilfulness.Historicalexperience,however,teachesusthat
themoderntimes’mottoequality,fraternity,andlibertyinvolvedexclusion
fromthebrotherhood,deprivationoffreedomorevenlifetoallwhowerenot
equalintherightsenseoftheword.History,andsadlythemostcurrenthistory
ofthetwentiethcentury,too,provethatsecularizationposesathreat.Revelation
oftheNewTestamentrejectedwhateversublimebusinessfiguresofegocentrism
andappealedtothehumanpersonstosurrenderthemselvesanddogooddeeds
becauseGodislove.
Modernman,asmanytimesbefore,refusedtoadmithis/herresponsibility
beforeGod.Whatismore,manalsoclaimedtherighttodeterminewhatis
goodandwhatisevil.Suchclaim,however,goesbeyondtheessentialpurpose
ofman,who,ontheonehand,canlearnaboutgoodandevil,whocan,and
alsomust,distinguishbetweengoodandevil,whocanandshoulddowhatis
good,butwhocanalsodowhatisevil.Still,modernmancannotsaythatfrom
nowongoodwillbeevilandevilwillbegood.Mannaivelyassumesthatitis
possibletoabandonhis/heressentiallygivenplaceandtriestoturntheworld
upsidedown.Buttoeveryactionthereisalwaysareaction.IfIamcuttingmy
ownthroat,Ishouldanticipateconsequences.InsteadofGod,manplacedhim/
herselfinthecenterofhis/heractivity,yets(he)didnotsucceedincreating
Heavenonearth.Justthecontrary,mancreatedtotalitarianregimeswhich,by
rejectingGod,brutallydestroyedthedignityofmaninthehellishconditionsin
theconcentrationcampsandgulags.Thisisthemainreasonwhyweconsider
thetimesweliveinasthetimesofthespiritualcrisis,thetimesofbreakingthe
establishedsocietalandculturalstructures,thetimestowhichamoodofdoom
andaconcealedfearoftheupcomingfutureareascribed.Thisconcealedfear
seemstobepeculiarincharacter.Itisthefearthatmanfeelsofhim/herself.
Thereisarealdangerthatpeoplewouldbeabletoturntheirowncreations
againstthemselves.Incurrentstateoftechnologythatwouldmeantocommit
acollectivesuicide.Thisratherbleakpictureofthepostmodernsituationraises
