measurableone.WeinPolanddonotknowtheconceptofpeaceatanyprice.There
isonlyonethinginthelivesofmen,nationsandcountriesthatiswithoutprice.

GermanyfelluponPolandon1September1939andWorldWarIIbegan.
Thealliesremainedinactive,evenafterformallydeclaringwaronGermanyon
3September.Polandthusfounditselfisolated.Actingontheagreementsigned
betweenthetwototalitariansuperpowerson23AugustandknownastheRibben-
tropMolotovPact,theSovietUnionjoinedinwiththeaggressionagainstPoland
from17Septemberonwards.ThepolicyofkeepingbothBerlinandMoscowat
thesamearm,slengthwouldthusendinashortwarfoughtontwofronts,though
intruththePolishunitslinedupontheRussianFrontwereorderednottoengage
withtheenemy.Notwithstandingthefactorsofextremelyunfavourablegeostra-
tegiclocation,hugelydisparatemilitarypotentialsand"aknifeintheback”from
Moscow,PolandfellsorelativelyrapidlybecausetheSecondRepublic,sdefensive
doctrineswereananachronism.
BearinginmindthetransformationoftheEuropeanelementtotheinternational
orderinthesecondhalfofthe1930s,wouldanyother,potentiallymoreeffective,
coursetoforeignpolicyhavebeenpossible?Whiletheansweristosomeextent
a"yes”,therearefewhistorianswhowouldquestionProfessorPiotrWandycz,s
opinionthat,despitetheefforts,andattimestheillusions,"inthenalanalysis,the
fateofPolandwasoutofthecountry,sownhands”.4
WhileitistruethatthepursuitofallianceswithFranceandtheUKdidnotpro-
tectPoland,theydidfacilitatethepreservationofcontinuityintheexistenceofthe
Polishstate.Furthermore,thankstothem,Polandbecamearecognisedmemberof
thecoalitionstandinguptoGermanyfromtheveryoutset,anditwas,afterall,in
thenameofPolandandherdefencethatbothpowersactuallydeclaredwaronthe
ThirdReichintherstplace,inadvanceofanydirectattacksbythelatteragainst
them.Thankstothetiesthathadbeenputinplace,theGovernment-in-Exilewas
installedinFranceevenbeforePoland,sformalmilitarycapitulation,onlytomove
ontoBritain,whenFrancefellsorelativelyquicklythereafter.PrimeMinister
WładysławSikorski,anablemilitaryman,ifapoorpolitician,wasimmediately
abletoofferhisalliesanarmyseveraltensofthousandsstrongthatwasmuch
moreupforaghtwiththeNazisatthattimethaneitheroftheirown.Aweak
