PassingthroughCairoonhiswaytoLuxor,healwaysmanagedtofindthetimetohelpoutwith
theequipmentattheseatofthePolishCenterofArchaeology.Theairconditioners,thermalwater
heatersandelectricalinstallationareallhiswork,donevoluntarily,inhisfreetime,ofwhichhe
neverhadtoomuch,alwayscalledbackurgentlytohisdutiesasChiefElectricalOfficeratWarsaw
University.
Perhapsthemostimportantthing,however,wasKrzysztof'shonesty,friendlinessandconstant
readinesstobeofhelptowhomeverneededit,whetherfriend,colleague,acquaintanceortotal
stranger.
Languageandculturalbarrierswereneveraprobleminthefaceofthissimple,commonplace
humancordiality.ThatiswhywhereverKrzysztofwent,heengenderedthesympathyandfriendship
ofcolleaguesatwork,localworkers,inspectorsandguardsfromtheAntiquitiesDepartment.Last
butnotleast,oftheinhabitantsofGurnavillageinLuxor,whowaitedimpatientlyforhisevery
arrival.LookingatthecrowdspayingtheirlastrespectstoKrzysztofinWarsaw,Ifeelcertainthat
thosewhowouldhavecometosaytheirlastfarewellinfar-offGurnawouldhavebeenjustasnumer-
ous.
