OBITUARY
Concurrentlywithhermuseumwork,shefilledinforProfessorKazimierzMichałowskiaslec-
tureronancientartatWarsawUniversity.Later(1973-1993)shelecturedontheartandarchae-
ologyoftheAncientNearEastattheAcademyofCatholicTheologyinWarsaw.Shepublished
anumberofscholarlytreatisesonobjectsfrommuseumcollections,aswellasontheresultsofarchae-
ologicalresearch.From1957shestartedgainingfieldworkexperiencewithProf.Michałowskiat
excavationsinEgyptandSudanandwassoonentrustedwiththeexplorationofTellAtrib,an
importantsiteintheNileDelta(1969-1984).TellAtribremainedafocalpointofherarchaeo-
logicalcareer.HavingcompletedtheexplorationofthePharaonickom,shewentontoworkinasso-
ciationwiththeCopticChurch,searchingforthevestigesoftheoldestchurchknowntohaveexisted
onthesite.SheremainedavaluedteammemberevenaftershewithdrewfromdirectingthePolish
researchatTellAtrib.ShealsoworkedinAlexandria,aswellasatFaras,whereshehadahand
inthediscoveryoftheEarlyChristiancathedralwithitsworld-famousmurals.
Herenthusiasm,senseofdutyandconscientiousnesswereappreciatedbyProfessorMichałowski,
aswellasbyhercolleaguesandassociates.Evenafterretirementin1990,shecontinuedtoworkin
theMuseum'sstoresofancientartasavolunteer,arrangingmaterialthattherehadneverbeen
enoughtimetostudycomprehensivelybefore.
ThroughoutherprofessionallifeBarbaraRuszczycwasdeeplyinvolvedinallkindsofvolunteer
services.Forclosetofiftyyears,startingin1952,sheservedaslibrarianattheJesuitCollegein
Warsaw.Inthelastyears,sheworkedwiththeDominicanOrderoftheCracowProvince,carrying
bookstothelibraryofalocalparishintheUkrainiantownofChortkhovandhelpingtocatalogue
themthere.HervisitstoUkrainewerealsodevotedtorecordingPolishheritageattheruinedceme-
teriesinCzortków,JagielnicaandJabłonowo.ShewasamemberandassociateoftheSocietyfor
PromotingtheCultofSt.AndrewBobola,takingpartintripstoplacesconnectedwiththelifeand
deathofthissaint.ShewasalsoassociatedwiththePontificalInstituteofEcclesiasticalStudies.
Inappreciationoftheresultsofhermuseumwork,shewasawardedin1987theKnight'sCrossof
theOrderofPoloniaRestituta.ShewasamemberoftheAssociationofArtHistoriansandthe
InternationalAssociationofEgyptologists.
Dr.BarbaraRuszczycdiedinWarsawonSeptember11,2001.
Thearchaeologicalcommunityhaslostapersonofgreatgoodnessandhonesty.Atthecemetery,
whereshewaslaidtorestinthefamilytombnexttohersiblings,shewasbidfarewellbynumerous
colleaguesandassociates.
