Thewallhadacoreofirregularstones
thicklypouredwithashylimemortarand
afacingmadeofregularcoursesofsmaller
dressedblocks,withconspicuousbrick
lacinglaideveryseventhcourse.The
disintegratedcorewasconsolidatedand
themissingfacingdulyrebuilttoaheight
of3mabovetheporticopavement,using
originalstonestakenfromtheimmediate
vicinity.Bricklacingwasrestoredwith
newbrickscuttotherequireddimensions
(Figs.7,8-10).(Thewallcopinginthe
northernsectionwillbecompletedfol-
lowingathoroughclearingandexam-
inationoftheother(eastern)facing.)The
newlyrestoredwallfacing,albeitdonein
originalstones,wasclearlyseparatedfrom
theextantoriginalmasonrywithalayerof
bitumentarpaperandadditionallywith
twoslightlyrecessedcoursesofnew
blocks.Moreover,thebitumentarpaper
introducedintothewallstructurealso
worksasaninsulationlayer,preventing
dampandsaltmigration.
Aspartofthefinaldisplayofthesite,
severalsectionsofwallsinstructures
adjoiningtheTheatreonthenorthwere
alsorestored.Twolongparallelwalls,
formingasortofcasematestructure
runningnorthforsome18m,were
discoveredtobepartlydismantled.The
easternwallwasseriouslydamagedand
distorted.Itwasrebuiltupto1.40-1.60m
abovegroundlevelusingoriginalstones
foundnearby.Itwillberestoredeventually
toaheightofc.2-2.30mtoserveas
aretainingwallcounteractingtheloadof
theadjacentescarpment.
