auditoriumbuiltbehindthePorticoback
wallhadbeendismantledcompletelyin
themedievalperiod.Restorersclearedthe
foundationtrenchtoadepthofsome
2.60mbelowthefloorlevelofthe
auditorium(i.e.,totheleveloftheoriginal
footing).Sincethemissingsectionofthe
porticobackwallwassome13.50mlong
here,itprovednecessarytorestorealsoan
adjacentsectionofthenorthernwallto
provideforlateralstability.
Ancientbuildingprincipleswerefol-
lowedstrictlyintherestorationofthe
foundation.Thelowercourses(upto
c.2.00mabovethefooting)weremadeof
coursedsquaredrubbletoppedwithtwo
layers
of
small
dressed
stones.
An
additionalbondingcourseofsmallblocks
wasintroducedatmid-height.Forthe
uppercourseslargerblocksofasizesimilar
tothoseusedoriginallywereused,there
havingbeenquiteanumberexcavatedin
thevicinity.Thewallwasrestoredfrom
onetothreecoursesabovethepavementof
theportico.Thesectionofthenorthern
wall(c.6mlong,1.30mwide)wasrebuilt
inthesamemannerandthemissingfacing
