1.85m).Thedoorswerestructuredinthe
requiredlocationsaccordingtotheoriginal
archaeologicalevidence.Sincethewallwas
designedalsotoserveasasustainingwall
fortheplannedescarpmentalongthe
cisterns,itwasdecidedtoblockthedoors
inordertocreateacontinuousbarrierand
toenhanceitsstructuralstrength.The
doorswereblockedwithsmallerstonesin
anattempttoseparatetheoriginal
structureofthehousefrommodern
additionsnecessitatedbytheplannedsite
exhibition[Fig.11].Anadditionalwall
dividingroomsF9andF10,structuredin
pillartechnique,wasalsothoroughly
rebuilt.
Therestorationofadoublewall
separatinghousesFAandFBturnedoutto
beparticularlydemanding.Duringthe
initialexploration,itwasascertainedthat
boththesewallshadsustainedheavy
damage,havingalmosttotallydis-
integratedduetohastydismantling
carriedoutinthemedievalperiod.
Robbingpitshadbeenfilledwithlarge
blocks,alldislocatedandwedgedtogether.
Thesewerecarefullyextracted,liftedand
preparedfortheensuingrestoration.To
securethestabilityoftherebuiltwalland
toavoidsubsidence,itwasdecidedtolay
newstripfoundations(c.0.30mthick).
Theseweremadeofplainconcretelaid
some0.80mbelowtheoriginalfloorlevel.
Bothwallswererebuiltupto4-5courses
ofashlars.Damp-proofinsulation(tarpaper
coatedwithbitumen)wasintroduced
approx.0.15mabovegroundlevel.
Anadjacentfragmentofthefacadeof
houseFBappearedtohavebeenlargely
dismantledsometimeinLateAntiquity,
whenalargebrick-madelimekilnwas
builtdirectlyontopofthewall.The
decisiontopreservethekilnnecessitated
thebuildingofaretainingwalltosupport
its
construction,
now
dangerously
overhanginghouseFB.Thesustaining
wallwasbuiltofsmallassortedstonesto
createavisualdistinctionbetweentwo
chronologicallydifferentstructures.
