theexcavatedmaterialfromEgypt.9
Similarpiecesaredocumentedamongthe
findsfromNaqlun10andKaranis.11Lamps
withpronouncedknobbasehavealsobeen
foundinlatercontexts,asevidencedat
Fustat-Istabl'Antar.12Afewothershapesof
basesconnectedwiththistypeofthelamp
havealsobeenobserved[Fig.1:10-12].
Althoughtherecordedfragmentsofside
wallsareplain,afewfragmentsare
decoratedwithcloselyspaced,verylight,
wheel-abradedlines.Fourpieceshave
additionalcharacteristicappliqués,which
consistofcolouredblobsappliedtothe
outersurfaceofmonochromeglasswarein
avarietyofpatterns[Fig.1:13-15].This
simpleornamentation,whichoriginatedin
themid-3rdcentury,enjoyedpopularityin
theeasternMediterraneanandonsitesin
theBlackSeainthe4thcentury.Inthe
West,itwascontinueduntilthe5th
century.
Ononeshard,thereisasinglelarge
emerald-greenblobintheshapeofan
almond.Theblobisprominentwithsome
protrusionontheinterior[Fig.1:13].More
blobsmayhavebeenarrangedinone
horizontalrowrunningaroundtheupper
partofthelamp(otherdesignsareequally
possible).Smalldotscouldbeplacedin
afewgroupsformingasimpletriangularor
diamond-shapedpatternalternatingwith
asinglelargeblob.Thereisabundant
comparativematerialfromEgypt.13Find-
placesextend,however,acrosstheMediter-
raneanandbeyond.
Oneisolated,smallshardmeritsspecial
interest.Here,ontheolive-greensurface,
wecanobservedarkbluetrailed-on
decorationofopendiamondsorachain
[Fig.1:16].Anidenticalfragmentwas
unearthedinMarinael-Alamein(personal
observation).Nootherexactparallelsfor
thisdesignhavebeenpublished.Fragments
withsimilarbutnotidenticalmotifscome
fromTebtynis,14Tellel-Balamun15and
Jerash.16
