SOLID-STEMMEDLAMPS
Numerousfragmentsofsolid-stemmed
lamps,oneofthemostcharacteristicitems
amongfindsfromtheKomel-Dikka
assemblage,withroundedorelongated
depressionsonthelowerpartofthestem,
havealsobeenrecovered[Fig.2:6-8].They
wereattestedalreadyintheIslamiclevelsof
theauditoria.19Moreover,lampswiththese
peculiarfeaturesareabundantlyrepresented
atthenearbyMareasite,leadingoneto
assumethattheywerealocalproduct.20
FUNNEL-NECKBOTTLES
Funnel-neckbottles,whichflourishedin
LateRomanandByzantinetimes,are
surprisinglyrepresentedbyonlyasmall
numberoffragments[Fig.3:1-5].Itisin
directcontrasttothehighproportionof
findsofthistypefromMareawherethis
shapewasamplyrepresentedandwas
indeedthemainoutputoftheas-
semblage.21Usuallysuchbottles,also
thoserecordedfromtheauditoria,were
madeofdifferentshadesofcommon
naturalbluish-greenandgreenglass.
Theywereleftundecorated.Likemostof
theByzantinebottles,alsoourfindsare
thin,insomecasesextremelythin-
walled.Theyhavefire-roundedrims,
globularbodiesandhighkickedupbases
[Fig.3:1].Thelackofpontilscarsis
characteristic.Theglassispreserved
generallyingoodcondition,although
someweathering,resultinginlight
iridescence,hasbeenobserved.Itcon-
tainsbubblesinvaryingamountsand
sizes.
Evidenceforthisverycommonand
geographicallywidespreadtypecomes
fromallovertheeasternMediterranean,
wheretheyarebroadlyattributedto
aperiodrangingfromtheearly5thtothe
early7thcenturyAD.22
