Inthethirdstep,theblankwas
perforated
bydrilling.Tisoperation
seemstohavebeenthemostrisky,due
tothelargenumberofmanufacturing
failures(about55.15%)amongfragments
withsecondaryworkingtraces.614shell
fragments(16.35%)bearperforation
traces.Generally,drillingwasinitiated
inthemiddleofablankwithoutany
previousscoringforkeepingthedrillin
place.Onlyin19caseswastheperfora-
tioninitiatedol-centerandthennot
completed.Tisshowsthatanearlyregular
rounddiscbeadwasintendedinallcases.
In97%ofthecases,theperforationwas
performedfromtheshellinterior,while
only13shellfragmentswereperforated
fromtheexterior.Telatteraremostly
lipfragmentswhichhaveribsonthe
innersidethatinterferedwithgettingthe
drillingstarted.
Accordingtobluntdrillingsections
onbrokenblanks[Fig.7],thedrills
appeartohavebeenshortandquite
thick.Tedrillingdiameterofcompletely
perforatedholesrangesfrom1.4mmto
3.4mm.Inonlytwocases,thedrilling
wasdonefromtwosideswherethebitwas
apparentlytooshorttoperforateathick
