Abstract:ArchaeologicalexcavationsofthemedievalIslamicburialgroundinthenorthernpartof
areaUontheKomel-DikkasiteinEgyptianAlexandria,carriedoutfrom2012to2014,yieldeda
totalof98graves.Ofthese,75containedhumanskeletalremains.Teminimumnumberofindi-
viduals(MNI)was156.Tearticlepresentspreliminarystudiesonthissample.Tescopeofthe
investigationwaslimited,however,owingtothepoorstateofpreservationofthebonematerial.

2500individualshavebeenstudiedfroman
osteologicalpointofview.

uncoveredatthetimewereforthemost
partdisassembledtogiveacc
esstoear-
lierlayers(Rodziewicz1984:237,241;
1991:75);norecordsexistoftheskele-
talmaterialbeingsubjectedtoanthropo-

logicalanalyses.Excavationresumedby
GrzegorzMajcherekin1990-1991did
notunearthanynewgravesatthetime
(Majcherek1992:7-8).Anumberof
Islamicgraveswasexploredmethodically
anddocumentedwhentheexcavation
commencedagaininthenorthernpart
ofareaUin2012(Majcherek2015:31;
Kulicka2015:65-71).Intheend,they
weredisassembledtoallowexplorationof
subsequentlayers.
Tewidelyaccepteddivisionofthe
cemeteryintothreemajorchronological
phases(Meyza2000:41-42;Promińska
1972:46-50)datesthegravesofthe
so-calledLowerNecropolistothe8th-9th
century(Majcherek2015:31),theMiddle
Necropolistothe9th-10thcentury,and
theUpperNecropolistothe11thand
12thcentury(Kulicka2015:62-63).
