Measurementsofthelongboneswere
takeninmillimetersaccordingtoR.Martin
andK.Saller(1959).2Hereonlythe
lengthsofthelongboneswillbereported
[Table4]asusefulinreconstructingthe
intravital(body?)height.
Staturesoftheindividualsunderstudy
werecalculatedusingregressionequations
byM.H.Raxteretal.(2008).Teseare
basedontheintravital(body?)height
reconstructedusingtherevisedFully
technique(Raxter,Auerbach,andRul
2006;Raxter,Rul,andAuerbach2007)
foraseriesofancientEgyptianskeletons.3
Techoiceofthisparticularmethodwas
basedonaneducatedguessonly,taking
intoconsiderationtherecentdateofthe
solutionandtherelativegeographical
closenessofthesamples.Todate,studies
oftheskeletalsamplesfromKomel-
-Dikkahaveemplo
yedthreedilerent
regressionformulae:L.Manouvrier(1892),
K.Pearson(1899),andM.TrotterandG.C.
Gleser(1952;1958).Asraisedinarelatively
rec
entstudyofthematerialfromKom
el-Dikka(Mahler2012:55),choosing
aparticularstaturereconstructionmethod
foramorecomprehensivestudyofthe
cemeteriesfromthissiterequiresfurther
study.4IfthespecialstatusofAlexandria
istakenintoaccount,themedieval
inhabitantsofthiscity,biologically,
couldhavehadmoreincommonwith
populations
of
other
Mediterranean
townsthanwithEgyptiansoftheOld
Kingdomlivingtothesouth.Asraised
byM.GiannecchiniandJ.Moggi-Cecchi
(2008)forpre-modernsamplesfromItaly,
themostconsistentresultswereobtained
whenPearson’sregressionformulaewere
employed(1899).Itmustbestressed,
however,thatthemethodemployedfor
thepurposeofthereportedstudy,aswellas
amorerecentonedevelopedbyRul(Rul
etal.2012)forEurope,werenottakeninto
accountinthatinvestigation.
Tewidelyacceptedandlongused
divisionoftheIslamiccemeteriesunder
studyintothreesubsequentphasesofthe
Upper,MiddleandLowerNecropoleis
(describedabove)willpresumablyundergo
revisionasaresultofthepresentexcavation
results.Itisappliedheretoensure
consistencywiththeresearchpublished
previously.
