TheConstitutionof2April19971,adoptedbytheNationalAssembly(i.e.,the
combinedchambersoftheSejmandtheSenate)andapprovedbytheNation
bywayofreferendum2,laysdownthefoundationsoftheRepublicofPoland’s
politicalandsocio-economicsystem.TheConstitution,passedalmostaquarter
ofacenturyago,wasanexpressionofapoliticalcompromisereachedinthe
Sejmofthesecondterm(1993-1997)betweenleft-wingandcentristparties3.
Ontheotherhand,theright-wingpartiesopposedtheadoptionofthenew
Constitution4.Atthattime,theyhadamodestparliamentaryrepresentation.
TheyconcentratedaroundtheIndependentuSolidarity”Self-Government
TradeUnion,whichstillplayedasignificantpoliticalroleinthe1990s.
