Summary:Theaimofthearticleistodefendrhetoricasstillvalidsciencetexts,especially
–argumentativetexts.IrefertothethesisofRichardE.Volkmann,thattherhetoricisthe
analogueoflogic;Itis,however,noreasoningbasedonpremisesorcertainprocedures,
andboththepremisesandproceduresuncertain.Thisisduetothefactthattheunder-
lyingreasoningmaybe,amongothers,beliefs,opinions,etc.Atthesametime–referring
toHermogenes–rememberthatrhetorichasdevelopedamethodfordeterminingproce-
duresfordealingwithsuchcases.Itisthescienceofstatus;itallowsforprecisedetermi-
nationbothofthedispute,andthemethodsofconductinthecourseofprovingany
hypothesis.IdeveloptheproposalofJamesC.Raymond,whodefendedthethesisthat
rhetoricisthemethodologyofthehumanities.ThereforeIopposethemoderncourtson
thefldeathofrhetoric”andadvancethethesisthatitisstillthebasicsciencewithinthe
informallanguage.
