0.0.Introductoryremarks
Inthispreliminarypartofthebook,Iwilldiscussseveraltopicswhicharerel-
evantasthebackgroundforanassessmentofthematerialpresentedinchapters
1–4.Onlytherstsectionistrulyintroductory,i.e.itisintendedtomaketangible
foranovicethehermeneuticalviewpoint,whichIadoptinmyapproachtonet-
workmodellingandCLingeneral.Thesubsequentsectionsareintendedforread-
erswhoarewell-acquaintedwithrelevantCLliterature.Theirgoalisto“prob-
lematize”issuesusuallytakenforgrantedorpassedoverinstandardpresentations
ofthedomainsinquestion.Inotherwords,Iattempttoshowthatsomeofthe
assumptionsunderlyingparticulartreatmentsarearbitraryoroflimitedadequacy
orbesidethepoint,whenonefocusesontheissuesfromawiderperspective.
Consequently,Idonotoffer“introductions”toparticulareldsofinquiry,but
rathercriticalcommentsonsomeofthebasicclaimsputforwardinthoseelds.
Byitsnature,anapproachfocusingongapsandquestionableassumptionscannot
besystematic.Iwilltrytoretracemystepsandintroducesomeorderinthenal
section(0.5.).Letmepointoutthatthepossiblyirritatingapproachadoptedhere
ismywaytodealwiththe“hermeneuticalsituation”,i.e.onewhichisnottrans-
parentatrstsight,intermsofferedbyCLtheorists.
0.1.Thehermeneuticalperspective
Inthissection,Iwilltrytopresent“thehermeneuticalperspective”.Iwillfocus
ontwoissues:the“manifestation”ofthingsandthescienticapproachtophe-
nomena(bothinthenaturalandhumansciences).Insection0.5.andchapter5,I
willreturntosomequestionsmentionedbelow.
