accordingtowhomQumran"[...]cannolongerberegardedasasecluded
settlement,awayfromthepoliticalandeconomiclifeofthecountry,and
mayreasonablybeassumedtohavebeenastoppingplaceonaninterna-
tionaltradingroute”(Cansdale1997:123).6
Inturn,accordingtoHirschfeld,"Qumranfunctionedasthecentreofan
estate,althoughintheHasmoneanperioditmayhaveservedasafort,a
way-stationandcentreofeconomicactivity”(2004:241,cf.alsoHirschfeld
1998:189)."(...)Thescrollswerebroughtforconcealmentinthenearby
cavesfromsomepubliclibrary,probablylocatedinJerusalem(i.e.theydo
notrepresentaremotedesertsectbutoneofthesocio-religiousfactions)(...);
theinhabitantsofQumranmayhaverenderedassistanceinconcealingthe
scrolls,butitisdoubtfulwhethertheyshouldbeidentifiedaswritersofthe

(2006:239).WhatHirschfeldclaimswastheplaceoflivingoftheEssenesare
theruinsofEnGedihehasdiscovered(Hirschfeld2000).
AdifferentvisionofQumranwaspresentedbyMagenandPeleg(2006,
2007),whodecided,aftertenseasonsofarcheologicalstudiesinthesettle-
mentarea,thatQumranwasfirstafortressandthenapotteryfactoryfor
manydecades.IntheHasmoneanperiod,"QumranwaspartofHasmonean
militarypresencealongtheJordanvalleyandtheDeadSea,(...)afterthe
Romanoccupationthesitewasnolongerusedformilitarypurposesandthe
buildingdeteriorated”.Thenewpoolsbuiltthereservednoritualpurposes,
butwerereservoirsofclaysuppliedintheformofasuspensionbyanaque-
duct."Therewassufficientclaytoproducetensofthousandsofclayves-
sels”,sothepotterymakingwasthemainactivityofthesite."Inyearsthat
wererainyandinwhichthestreamsflooded,thequantityofclaycollected
inthepoolsofQumranwasbeyondthesite’sproductionabilityforpottery
vessels.Inthoseyearstheclaywastransferredtootherproductioncentres,
suchasJerusalem(sic!),Jerichoorothersites”(cf.page94).Thecylindrical
jars"weremistakenlycalledscrolljars,whereastheywereusedforstoring
freshanddrieddatesaswellashoney”(Magen,Peleg2006:109-113).
Inthecontextoftheusuallycontradictorytheoriesaboutthefunctionof
Qumranandtherolethissettlementperformed,asignificantargumentverify-
ingatleastsomeoftheabovehypothesescanbeprovidedbytheresultsof
studiesofvariationsinthemineralandchemicalcompositionofceramicves-
selsinrelationtotheirshape,stratigraphicpositionandplaceofdiscovery:
