Answeringtheabovequestionsistheaimofthepresentdissertation.
SixtytwospecimensofQumranpottery,mostlyrepresentingdeVaux’sPe-
riodsIIandIII,werecomparedinitwith46fragmentsofpotteryfromJeri-
chodatedbythestratigraphic-architecturalstagesofdevelopmentofwinter
palaces(Netzer2001;Bar-Nathan2002).Theresearchalsoembracedasmall
amountofsherdsofRomanjarsfromKhirbetMazinandjarsfromthe
Herodianhotspringsatez-Zara/Callirrhoe9(cf.Clamer1989,1997).
SamplesoftheQumranpotterywereprovidedbyJeanBaptisteHumbert
OPoftheÉcoleBibliqueetArchéologiquedeFrançaisedeJérusalem,the
potteryfromJerichocamefromDrRahelBar-NathanoftheIsraelAntiquity
AuthorityandProf.EhudNetzeroftheHebrewUniversity,whilespecimens
fromez-ZaraweresuppliedbyDrChristaClamer,theÉcoleBibliqueetAr-
chéologiquedeFrançaisedeJérusalem.

7AnindividualcharacteroftherangeoftheQumranceramicswouldbeanotherargu-
mentforthesectarianoriginoftheinhabitantsofQumranindicativeoftheirhermetismorat
leastlimitedcontactwiththeexternalworld,restrictedtradeexchangeand,perhaps,monastic
characterofthecommunity.Inturn,thepresenceofceramicsfromoutsideQumran,e.g.Jeri-
cho,andparticularlyceramicsimportedfromafar,wouldprovelackofisolation.
