teachersusuallyhaveintheclassroomandoutsideit.
Resultsofthestudiesontraineesandtheirmotivationsforchoosingthis
careerseemprettyconsistentwiththewaytheyconceptualiseteachingas
avocationandamission,whichisfurthercommentedoninthenextpartof

2001andBartell,2005).

Individualdifferencesandsystemsofbeliefs
1.4.1
Teachers’beliefsaboutteaching
AsHargreaves(1993:51)putsitinhisdiscussionofindividualismand
individualityintheeducationalcontext,“Aschoolshouldhaveamissionor
asenseofmission[ł].Missionsmitigateuncertaintiesofteachingbyforging
commonbeliefsandpurposesamongtheteachingcommunity.”Butteachers
areindividuals,withtheirownmotivationsandtheirownmissions.Pre-service
andnoviceteachersdonotcomeempty-handedtotheirclassrooms.Teycome
fromcertaincontexts(educational,personal,social),theyhavedińerentvalues
andbeliefs.Teyaredińerentonthepersonal,educationalandexperiential
levels.Whattheybringistemporary;itfluctuatesandevolvesovertimetofinally
reachastageofrelativestability.Also,forthepre-serviceteachers,whoarestill
languagelearnersintheprocessofcompletingtheirprofessionalqualifications,
theirindividualdińerencesandwhattheybringwiththemselvestotheirnew
classroomsmustbeseenasimportantvariablesinhowtheysetthemselvesup
intheroleofteacheratthebeginningofthisprofessionaljourney.Itmaybe
assumed,asKublerLaBoskey(1993:23)putsit,that
novicesdonotenterteachereducationprogramsasblankslates.Afermany
yearsinclassroomstheyhaveideasaboutwhatteachersdo.Buttheseideasare
derivedfromastudentperspective,notateacherperspective,andthus,theyare
verylikelytobeinaccurate,inappropriateorincomplete.Suchmisconceptions
