motivationstoteachandontheirﬁrstclassroomexperiences.Tedatawas

collectedfromreﬂectivenarrativesinwhichthesubjectswereaskedtodeﬁne

theirmotivesforbecomingEFLteachersandanalysethemostsigniﬁcantfactors

thatcontributedtotheirdecisionstoenterthisjob.

TedecisiontobecomeaFLteacherinthecaseofmostofthestudents

wasnotimmediate.Itrequiredre-analysingone)sattitudetoEnglish,withits

culture,theirlearningexperiences,laterontheirﬁrstteachingexperiences

andlesssigniﬁcantlyexternalinﬂuences,suchasthoseoffamilyormaterial

beneﬁts:

Tedecisiontobecomeateacherwasnotmadeinaday[ł].*1

First,mymotivationwasﬂuctuatingwildly:fromconfdenceandfascination

withtheEnglishlanguagetototallackofbelieveinmyabilities[ł].Iwasin

twomindsthinkingaboutfuture.Iwassuccessful.[ł].Iobservedachangein

mymotivation.Iwoulddescribeitasintrinsicandintegrative.Itrytomake

myteachingmorepersonal(learners’needs).Factors:fascinationwithEnglish,

dedicationandencouragementfrommyparents.

Iassumethatinitialfailuresanddifcultieshadanimpactonmyattitude,self-

esteemandthewayIperceivemyselfasateachernow.Iamstrongandself-

consciousperson.

Teideaofteachingwouldnotevencrossmymind[ł]IknewIwaswellprepared

forit,butIwouldneverhaveguessedthatitwouldgivemesomuchsatisfaction.

Havingcontrolwasreallyexciting.Nonetheless,thebestthingwasthattheothers

thoughthatIwasactuallygoodatit.TogetherwiththethoughtthatIwasnotas

goodasIinitiallyassumedmymotivationwasgettinglowerandlower.Fortunately

therewerealsonicemoments.[ł].

Adecisionwasnotimmediate.Ihadtomaturetoit.Factorschangingovertime,

dependingontheexperience.[First]allIwantedwastravellingallovertheworld

andmakingthemostofmylife.

Inthegreatmajorityofanswersgiven,intrinsicmotivationseemstofeature

moststrongly.Testudentstalkoftheneedforpersonalfulﬁlment:
