Inhavingthesevisionsinmind,thepurposeoftheresearchistoshowhowcur-
rentandreadilyaccessibletechnologiescanbesmartlycombined,tocreatetrans-
parencythroughcontinuousinformationflowinthedeliveryprocess.Themost
importantcriteriaforsooncommercialusewillbe:

smartphones,astheyexperienceworldwideahighacceptanceinthepri-
vateaswellasbusinesssectorand
•
telecomfeesformobileinternet,astheydropsteadilyalloverEurope.
Thus,thelowinvestmentcostofthemobiledevicesandacceptableroaming
feesmakeacrossboarderemploymentfeasibleinthenearfuture.
1.2.Thefindingsoftheprototype
Thepracticalfindingsprovethatthroughtheapplicationofaninnovativetech-
nology,bothnewtransparencyofsupplychains,andalsointeractivecommunica-
tionanddistributioncontrolispossible.Thiswasprovenbyaprototypesystem
withinaresearchprojectexecutedattheLogistikuminSteyr,Austria(Graf&Nie-
dermayr,2010,p.82).Thisprototypeuseslocation-andcontextbasedinformation
forcommunicationandenablesuserstopostinformationofreallocationsrandom-
lyintothevirtualworld.
Theprototypesoftwarecontrolsandmonitorsnotonlyindividualtrucks,but
alsoindividualdeliveryordersfromsupplierstoreceivers.Thepurposeofsuch
functionalityistobeabletoreactaccordinglytorusheventsinthesupplychain,to
identifyandtorespondwithmoreagilitytoshortcallsupplybottlenecks.
Thevisionofsuchopensystemsistoovercomethemediabreakofproprietary
aswellasmodalspecificsystemswithastandardisedinternetbasedcommunica-
tionandinformationsystem.
2.PROBLEMDEFINITION–DELIVERYINEFFICIENCES
CAUSEDBYLACKOFREALTIMEINFORMATION
Ifenterprisescanhandleenvironmentaldynamics,theywillbesuccessful.If
theyreactinappropriately,itwillnegativelyinfluencetheoperatingperformance
(Wallenburg&Weber,2005,pp.45-48).Besideahighenvironmentaldynamic,
thesurroundingofsupplychainsisoftennon-transparent.Theproblemisalackof
trustbetweensupplychainpartners.Enterprisesbothleadtoinformationbarriers
thathamperthecommunicationandcoordinationwithinthesupplychainsubstan-
tially.Duetotheinsufficienttransparency,processesalongthesupplychainand
theexistingenvironmentaldynamic,getmoreandmorenon-transparentandare
subjecttodisorders(Heusler,Stölzle&Bachmann,2006,p.20).
