1.INTRODUCTION
Thispaperdescribeshowshipmentinformationcantheoreticallybemade
transparenttostakeholders,withthejointapplianceoflocationbasedsystemsand
trackingtechnologies.Inthetelecommarketthereisastrongtrendtowards
smartphoneswithpermanentinternetaccessandintegratedGlobalPositioning
System(GPS)functions.Thistrendcouldbeusedforasolutionofexistingsupply
chainmanagementproblems.
Inadditiontothenavigationsignalreception,smartphonesdoalsohave,de-
pendingonthecoverage,constantconnectiontoacellularnetwork.Hence,thereis
abi-directionalcommunicationpossible,whicheasesthepossibilitynotonlyto
receivesatellitesignals,butalsotosendanddownloadinformationtoandfrom
internetapplications.DuetotheaccuratepositioningbyGPSandcellularnetwork,
theuserpermanentlycanbetrackedandservedwithlocationrelatedinformation.
Currentlyavailablemobilelocation-basedcommunicationservicesenabletheir
userstoconsumecategorizedspatialinformationcontainingtext,images,soundor
video.Thecategorizationofinformationcanbemadebothpassively–auserre-
ceivesautomatedandpredefinedinformation–andactively–theuserrequests
informationindividually.
1.1.Theresearchoutline
Thisresearchpaperstatesthatgeo-trackingfunctionalitiescanbeusednotonly
forvehicles,butalsoforthetrackingoftheirindividualloads.Inaddition,accurate
loaddatacanbepublishedinrealtimetoallrelevantstakeholders(likethesender,
theshipperorthereceiverofaload)viatheinternet.Forecastsofestimatedarriv-
ingtimescanefficientlysupportthesupplychainmanagementofallpartnersin
realtimeandthephysicalmovementofmaterialstreamsbecomesvisible.
Forexample,whenatruckdriverwantstoknowthecheapestpetrolstation
closetohiscurrentroute,LocationBasedServices(LBS)canprovideactualin-
formationtohismobiledevice.Wheneverthetruckstopsforalongertimeperiod,
thechangedtimeofarrivalcanbetransmittedtopartnersconcerned.Suchevents
cantrigger,forexample,achangeintheproductionprocess,orare-orderinady-
namicdeliverytimewindowmanagementsystem.LBShaveahighpotentialto
makeadeliveryprocessmuchmoretransparentinthefuture.
