wasdiscussing.Professor’sstudents,ProfessorAleksanderBurscheandRenata
Ciołek,PhD,intheIntroductiontothebookAntiquityandBarbarians,7dedicated
tohimonhis70thbirthdayreminisceabouthowProfessorKolendowouldexpress
hisopinions.Aftercomplimentingtheworksheusedtosay,“Iagree,Iagree,all
thesame…,”or“thistextisbrilliant,onlyyouneedto…writeitalloveragain.”
Thatwaswhyitmademesohappytohearthathe“likedthisoneverymuch”
afterhehadreadoneofthechaptersofmywork.Heshowedhisinterestinhis
studentsalsobyofferinghiscompanionship.Heaccompaniedandsupportedme
ataninternationalconferenceinWarsawandlaterwediscussedmypapersitting
comfortablyonasofaintheUniversityofWarsawformerLibrary,wherehehad
spentmanyyearsstudyingandreading.
Ifindmuchofhisadviceendlesslyusefulandapplyhissuggestionsnotonlyin
myownwritingbutalsointeachingstudentshowtobediligentandhowtohave
abroadperspective.Histeachingnotonlyallowedmetoanalysesourcetextsas
aphilologist,butalsobroadenedmyhorizons,sinceheshowedmeworkethicin
practice.Hewasalwaysverygladtohelpwithanykindoftext,notexclusivelymy
doctoraldissertations,andhisdeskwasalwaysoccupiedwithmillionsofthingsto
read.Hespentalotoftimediscussingthem,alsoonthephone.
AftermyPhDdefence,asagifthegavemeaveryinterestingsuggestionfor
research,neverdonebefore.WespokeaboutitonthephonebackinJanuary,he
seemedtolookforwardtoourdiscussions.Wenevermanagedtohavethem.
Hispassingwasahugelossforhisfamilyandfriends,hiscolleaguesandstu-
dents,aswellasformanyscholarsconnectedwithhistoricalandphilologicalstud-
ies.Professorwasakindman,anexceptionalscholar,agreatteacher.MyMentor.
