Summary:Inthispaper,thepresenceofthebirdlifeinthemodernCroatianlanguageisdiscussed,
andtheobservationsconsiderboththechildren’sandtheadults’lingualhorizon.Theresearchstarts
fromtheassumptionthataboutthirtybirdsareknownineverydaycommunication,andthattheolder
population,especiallyrural,knowsmoreornithonymsthanyoungandurbanpopulation.Whatismore,
thepaperincludesacomparisonexaminingwhethertheornithonymsinthechildren’sworldhave
thesameconnotationasornithonymsintheadults’world.Thebasisforexploringtheconnotation
ofornithonymsisestablishedonthecommonlyknownpositiveconnotationofsomebirdsinpoetry
forchildrenwhicharenegativelymarkedintheEtymologicalDictionaryorintheadults’world.Ac-
cordingtotheBirdListofCroatianOrnithologicalSocietyinCroatia,thereare390speciesofbirds.
