Theimpulsetocreatethedictionarywasbornfromtheauthor’s40-year-longexperienceas
ahydrogeologist,duringwhichtimeheoftenconsultedtheveryrichEnglish-languagescientific
andtechnicalliterature,andcooperatedwithnumerousforeignresearchinstitutions.Hisscientific
endeavourswereoftenhamperedbytheunavailabilityofagood,contemporaryhydrogeological
English-PolishandPolish-Englishdictionary.Thepresentvolumeisanattempttofillthegap.Its
aimistomakeiteasierforPolishscientistsandthemanystudentsofhydrogeologyormining,en-
vironmentprotectionstudiesandrelateddomainstoreadEnglish-languagetechnicalandscientific
literature,whichseemsindispensableforbothstudentsandresearchers.
Thedictionarycontainsnotonlypurelyhydrogeologicalterminology,butalsothevocabulary
ofrelateddomains,i.e.mathematics,physics,geology,environmentprotectionetc.Forobvious
reasons,theterminologyisnotcomplete:initsselection,theauthorfollowedhisownexperience
andintuition.
Bothpartsofthedictionary–English-PolishandPolish-English–havea‘nested’construction:
ineachentry,themaintermisfollowedbyalistofthemostfrequentcomposedtermscontaining
theterm.Ineach‘nest’,themaintermisabbreviatedtoitsfirstletter.Inordertomakethedictiona-
rymorefunctional,itissupplementedbytwoseparatecompilations:ofselectedabbreviationsand
acronymsusedintheEnglishandPolishliteratures,andofEnglishunitsofmeasurewiththeirSI
equivalents.ThespellingisBritish.
Thematerialpresentedinthevolumehasmanysources:English-languagescientificandtechni-
calhydrogeologicaltexts;Polishandforeigndictionaries;andInternetsources.Theauthorisaware
thatthedictionary,thefirstpublicationofthiskindinPoland,isnotwithoutfaultandcouldwell
benefitfromsomechanges,improvementsandadditions.HewillthereforebegratefultotheRea-
