suchasWorthing,Brighton,Morecambe,Scarboroughandmanymore,
beganturningthemintomajortouristcenters.Talkingoftheattractions
ofthelate-nineteenthcenturyVictorianresorts,historianJohnWalton
paintsthefollowingpicture:
TebiggerVictorianresorts,andespeciallythosewhichcateredfortherap-
idly-expandingworking-classholidaymarketofthelatenineteenthcentury,
mostobviouslyBlackpoolandSouthend,alsooferedCpleasurepalaces’
,as
thepopularjournalistG.R.Simscalledthem.Teycombinedmusic-hall,
varietyanddancingwithabroadermenuwhichmightincludezoos,opera
houses,theatres,aquaria,lagoonswithVenetiangondolasandgondoliers,
pleasuregardensandexhibitions.Tiskindofprovisionreacheditsapoth-
eosisinBlackpool’sTowerandWinterGardens,andintheevenmoreambi-
tiousToweratNewBrighton,afinancialfailurewhichwasdemolishedsoon
afertheFirstWorldWar16.
Asforpopularamusements,cyclingbecamefashionableasaleisure
activity.ItwasintheVictorianerathatitmetitsfulldevelopment.Te
safetybike,whichwasbroughtoutin1885,wasthecheapestwayto
travelbothformenandwomen.Moreover,tennisburstintosudden
popularitymidwaythroughQueenVictoria’sreignandfunctionedas
apopulardiversionfortheEnglishmiddle-class,includingalsowom-
enwhoplayeditatsocietygardenpartiesandattennisclubs.Further-
more,croquet(anoutdoorgameplayedonalawn,wheretheplayershit
woodenballswithamalletthroughhoopsembeddedintothegrass)is
worthmentioning.ItstartedinEnglandinthe1850sbasedontheold
Frenchgame(lalonguepaume)17andwasparticularlysuitableforwom-
en.Lastbutnotleast,twoindoorgames,tabletennisandbadminton,
closelylinkedwithlawntennis,alsooriginatedinVictorianEngland18.
Asof1837roughlyhalfofEngland’spopulationwasliterate;thatfig-
urecontinuedtogrowthroughouttheVictorianperiod(dueespecially
toreformsthatmandatedatleastminimaleducationforeverybody).In
regardtoliterarypredilections,themiddle-classVictorians,whoconsti-
