undertheinfluenceofgeneralizeddefinitionsbasedonhistoricalandsoci-
ologicalresearch,butmuchmoreoftentheyresultfromourindividualexpe-
riencesandmemories.TheeighthvolumeofStudiesinModernArchitecture
isastoryaboutcities-diverse,colorful,withauniqueatmosphere,charac-
teristicsmellsandtheluggageofhistory;aboutcitiescreatedbysuccessive
generationswhohopedthattheywouldbecomemodern,thattheywould
beislandsoffreedomandaplacefriendlytolife.
ThevolumeincludesstudiesonParisianfountains,commemorative
plaquesinKharkiv,andtheJewisharchitecturalheritageinLviv.Through
theWoolworthskyscraper,wewillmovetoNewYork’sManhattanfromthe
beginningofthe20thcentury.WewilltakeawalkaroundthecityofWar-
sawandamodernistblockofflats,aswellasajourneythroughthestations
ofJapanandEurope,whichnotonlyperformafunctionrelatedtopublic
transport,butalsoconstituteamodernculture-formingspace.
