erations.50InthetimesoftheEmpire,theygraduallylosttheircom-
petencesinfavourofimperialofcials,includingespeciallythepre-
fectoftheCity.Teofceitselfmusthavebeenabolishedbythe
emperorSeverusAlexander,althoughthelastepigraphicmentions
referringtothemdatebacktothemid-thirdcentury.51
