theuseofhighlyriskyproductionsystemsarenowadded.
However,ingeneral,thetownsthatexercisethefunctionofcountycenters
arebeingaffectedbyallthesedamageswithlessvirulenceduetothe
centralizationofpublicandprivateservicesandimmigrationofbothmanyyoung
andoldpeoplefromsmallervillagesandhamletswithfewerfacilities.
Someformsofminingareanewriskfornumerousmountaincounties:the
obtainingofgasviathetechniqueofhydraulicfracturingorfracking.Behindthis
Anglicismthereistheworkconsistinginfractureofthesubsurfacebyinjecting
water,sandandchemicalsubstancesabout3,000mdeepinordertoobtainthe
upwellingofgas.Theenvironmentalistgroupsopposedthisprocedurebecause
theyfeardamagingaquifers,moreover,theincreasingtensioninthegeological
faultsanditisalsogeneratingagreatalarmandthesocialrejection.Evenifthe
nameisnew,thetechniqueisnot,becausesimilarminingworkshavebeen
practicedfromthefirstcenturyinsomeareasofSpanishmountains(Montesde
León)withnamesmorelinkedtotheirterritorialconsequences:arrugia(gallery)
and,aboveall,ruinamontium(collapseofthemountains),atechniquethat
consistedindammingupwateratthetopofamountain,droppingithard,
buildingundergroundcorridorsandextractingminerals.Tothecurrentprocedure
addstheuseofmorepowerfulchemicalresources,butbasicallyitisthesame.
AlthoughtherearestillnoapprovedprojectsinSpanishterritoryforgas
extractionbymeansoffracking,accordingtothereportsfromtheMinistryof
Industry,between10and15projectsmaybeinterestedinharvestingusingthis
technique

iftheexploratorytestsarerevealedpositive,andmanycompanies
havebeguntobuylandtodotests,asinthecaseofLasMerindades.Inthesame
area,inthemoorofLaLora(Burgos),oilwasdiscoveredabout50yearsago
(1964).Forabrieftime,about5,000barrelsadaywereextracted;today,the
productionreachesjustahundredbarrels,buttheoldpumpsextractingoilare
stillthere,atpresentsurroundedbywindturbines.Inthesefragileareaswewill
havetowaittoseetheeffectsofwhattheprestigiousBritishnewspaper((The
Guardian”calledthe((newSpanishenergyfever”triggeredbythenew
perspectivesofgasextractionbymeansoffracking.
Asregardsthewildlifeutilizationthroughhuntingactivities,agoodpartof
themountainousregionsanalyzedareoptimalspacesforbreedingspeciesofbig
gamehunting(deer,wildboar,etc.).Foralongtimetheseactivitieshavenothing
todowiththewaysandtraditionalaimsofhunting,butarelinkedtoleisureand
tourismofresidentsinurbanareas,sometimesquitefarfromtheplaceswherethe
