consistsoffiveparts,threeappendices1andaglossary.Theintroductory
chapterconsistsofageneraloverviewofclassicalTibetangrammar
whichhasitsbasisintwoknownroottexts,SumcupaandRtagskyi!jug
pa:abriefhistory,itsauthorship,itsdevelopmentanditsplaceinthe
modernTibetanlanguage.InexplanatoryremarksIhavetriedtopresent
anumberofpointswhichhavenotbeenwidelyexaminedbymodernTi-
betanandWesternscholars,raisingfordiscussioncertainproblemsthe
Tibetansthemselvesfaceintheirgrammar.Thisdiscussionisnotonlya
discusssionoftheproblemofthecommentariesexaminedbutis,ina
widerseense,anexaminationofthegeneralproblemsofclassicalTi-
betangrammar.
Ihavetriedmybesttooffertoreaderssomeideasandanewap-
proachonthepointswhichIhavediscussed.Oneshould,however,keep
inmindthatthediscussionscarriedoutherearepresentedfromthepoint
ofviewoftraditionalTibetangrammar,andnotfromthepointofview
ofEuropeanlinguistics.
