Ultimately,thisperspectivehighlightsthevarious
historicalcontinuitiesatworkbetweenthesocialist
projectandpostwararchitecturaldiscourse.
MobilityandScalesofAssociation
Mostofthenarrativesinthisbookbeginwiththe
postwarcongressesofCIAM.Manyparticipantsinthe
1949BergamocongressrecalledtheyoungOskar
Hansen,whopubliclycriticizedaspeechbyLeCorbusier.
WiththesupportofJerzySołtan,thiscriticalvoicewas
integratedasamemberoftherenewedCIAMandits
network.HansenstartedwiththeCIAMSummerSchool
inLondonin1949andthenwasinvitedtosubsequent
CIAMmeetings.2OthermembersofCIAMfromCentral
Europeactedasferrymenfortheiryoungercompatriots:
JózsefFischer,whohadnochanceofacquiringapassport
fromthesocialistregimeinHungaryhimself,hadCharles
PolónyiinvitedtothemeetinginOtterloinstead(1959).3

whythesearchitectswereattachedtotheidea
ofcontinuingCIAMandsome,likeJerzySołtan,shared
theiraffiliationwithbothgroups,whichwasfacilitated
byhiscontactswithSigfriedGiedion,WalterGropius,
JosepLluísSertandJaquelineTyrwhittattheHarvard
UniversityGraduateSchoolofDesign,wherehewas
aprofessorfrom1961onward.Hansenalsocrossed
bordersbetweenarchitecturalgroups;besideshislinks
toTeam10andCIAM,hewasassociatedwithGEAM
(
Grouped’Etuded’ArchitectureMobile
)andclaimedthat
hisworkdevelopedtheideasofthe“situationist
movement.”4
