Whatdistinguishedmostarchitectsofthefictitious
Team10East,anameinusethroughoutthisvolume,
wastheiraffiliationwithCentralEuropeanarchitectural
cultureand,aboveall,theexperienceofarchitectural
practiceinstatesocialism.IntheconditionsoftheCold
War,thisexperienceincludedworkingunderpolitically
authoritarianregimesanddealingwiththeconsequences
ofthepoliticaleconomyofstatesocialismforthe
productionofspace,especiallycentralplanningandthe
(partial)de-commodificationofland.
Ratherthanbeingaretroactivemanifesto,Team
10Eastisagenerativeconceptualtoolthatgrasps
atanunderstandingofwhatwassharedbythesefellow
travelersofTeam10.Itisnottheintentionofthisbook
tosuggestthattheworkofthearchitectsunder
discussionisexhaustedbytheircontributiontotheTeam
10discourse;northattheirworkistobestrictlyjudged
accordingtothecriteriaofTeam10.The“East”inthe
titleofthebookreferstotheirspecificpositionfrom
whichmodernismwasrethought,evenifitdidnotalways
coincidewithfiguresoperatingfrom“behind”theIron
Curtain.ThisiswhythebookincludestextsonJerzy
Sołtan,CharlesPolónyiandAlexisJosic(AljošaJosić)who
traveledacrossColdWardividesthat,besidesmaking
